New yarn! Wow, is it soft!

February 28, 2007

Today I got into the store to find bags and bags of yarn strewn around our sitting area: the most remarkable color combinations, the softest singles, hand painted merino:  Malabrigo merino, from South America.  Beautiful solids in colors ranging from subtle to knock ‘em dead bright, variegateds of gorgeous hues.  I can’t wait to get my needles into them…but I’ll have to, as I am in the middle of a sweater and four pairs of socks at the moment.  It retails for $10.50 for 3.5 oz.  Come on in and see it!  Contact us to order it.

In addition, we continue to work on handspun yarn: Sue is spinning up some beautifully soft jacob from her lovely little VeeAnn. She has just finished spinning up VeeAnn’s mom’s fleece, Vanessa. Tom is spinning up some Icelandic from his “Miss Badger”.  I am spinning up some of Romney James’ yearling fleece, a charcoal grey.  We are in the middle of rearranging one section of the store, to “house” all the handspun yarn, most in lots large enough to make a sweater, though also available by the skein.

And Mary has designed a child’s hat, printed up the pattern, and along with other of our own patterns, is now for sale in the store.

Later today, I am going to post photos of as much of this stuff as I can and upload (is that the term?) them onto the blog.  Watch for them!

Hello, out there, yarnaholics!

Welcome to the world of yarn, here in beautiful downtown Newport, New Hampshire, the Sunshine Town. (Once in a while, anyway, and not in winter much!)…

Somewhere around 1991, I started taking over my family’s furniture store, and little by little, each bay of the store got emptied of sofas and recliners and filled with yarn and fleece and spinning wheels and supplies.  Every day, it seems, the UPS guy comes in with ever more boxes of gorgeous yarns and needles and buttons and books, books, books.  For example, this week he brought us a bunch of brand new Tapestry, Nashua, and Noro yarns. (WHERE am I going to PUT it??? The shelves are full, full, full.)  That Tapestry, by the way, if you aren’t familiar with it, is a gorgeous sport weight tone on tone 70% wool, 30% soysilk yarn, shiny and luscious…

Several of my very strange friends are busily handspinning yarn from fleeces from our sheep, getting ready for a big show we will be doing in Manchester in July…but more about that later.  Meanwhile, all our handspun will be hanging here, and if no one buys it beforehand, it will be here to pack in July.  There are a few of us, and between us we have romney, coopworth, border leicester, Jacob, shetland, icelandic, and corriedale sheep, plus some crossbred beauties in our spinning flocks.  Usually, you can find raw fleeces, rovings, batts, and yarn here for sale as well.

I figure as time goes on, I’ll let people know what new products there are, do intros to some yarns and fibers, tell you about new books, feature patterns, and in general, help you to dive in and swim around, cyber-wise, in all this lovely stuff here in the store.  Come and visit if you’re in the area.  Contact me if you have questions.  And knit, knit, knit!
